Revisiting my extensive music collection, one artist at a time

Forty Year Friday (1983) – TRIUMPH “NEVER SURRENDER”

Welcome (back) to Forty Year Friday after a six-year break. Each week in 2017 I discussed my favorite albums from 1977, and now I turn my focus to another one of my favorite years of music, 1983. I originally came up with the concept for Thirty Year Thursdays on my personal Facebook page in 2013, where I wrote brief posts (one or two paragraphs) on every key album for me from ’83, starting with 30+ albums I enjoyed back then, followed by ’83 releases I discovered later on. Throughout 2023 I will share those posts here every Friday, along with some follow-up comments as needed. Since I wrote those posts in the approximate order they were released that year, I begin this series with a record I eagerly picked up in January 1983, Never Surrender by Triumph, the incredible Canadian trio of guitarist/singer Rik Emmett, drummer/singer Gil Moore and bassist Mike Levine.

Triumph - Never Surrender

Posted on my Facebook page Jan. 17, 2013:

It’s Thirty-Year Thursday. My featured album today is Triumph “Never Surrender.” Released in January 1983, it was the first new release of the year that I loved, and even though it’s not their best album (that honor would go to 1981’s Allied Forces or 1979’s Just A Game), it features some great songs, especially the ones written & sung by guitar god Rik Emmett. For anyone who may not know Canada’s second best power trio, this title track is as good an introduction as anything they’ve done. Enjoy.

I kept that Facebook post very brief, barely discussing the album. There are a number of highlights, especially the title track, “When The Lights Go Down,” “Writing On The Wall” and “A World Of Fantasy.” Even though I only mentioned Emmett’s contributions in the original post, Moore’s drumming & vocals are equally impressive. I should also point out that their subsequent album, Thunder Seven, is in the running for their strongest release, along with the aforementioned Just A Game and Allied Forces.

What a great surprise to see you back in my WordPress Reader Rich and with a great pick to start the new year!
Picking from that list of Triumph releases that you mentioned is tough but I would go with Allied Forces as my fav followed by Thunder 7 and then its a toss up after that.
Moore always delivered on the rock side of things and Rik had that flair for the melodic. Together it worked until Sport of Kings.
Triumph great band and again great to have you back!

Nice to see you in a non-trivia context. I know of Triumph but don’r really know them. I’ll give it a spin.

Hey great to see you back, Rich. “Never Surrender” and “Thunder Seven” are probably my two favourite Triumph albums. “Allied Forces” is up there too.

Hey Rich, wow, it’s been a long time and hope all is well!

While it’s fair to say I was into ’80s music much more back then, I still have a weak spot for a good deal of it, given it represents the decade during which I basically grew up in Germany.

Triumph are a band I think I only know by name. At least I don’t recall a specific song title.

Looking forward to your series and great seeing you back! 🙂

Nice to have you back! I don’t know if Triumph are quite my thing, but I’m sure we’ll have others we agree on.

    • Thanks, Graham. I have to imagine we’ll find some common ground throughout this series. Triumph is an interesting group, as they can appeal to fans of hard rock, metal, prog and arena rock, depending on the song/album.

Having listened to them it pains me to see they are too Bon Jovi-arena rock-y for my tastes.

    Like

    • I’m glad you gave them a shot, Jim. I can’t argue with your arena rock assessment, although as someone who’s never liked Bon Jovi I can’t agree with that comparison. They’re more in line with Journey, Toto or Boston. I know you’re a guitarist and should love Rik Emmett’s playing. The fact that he sings like an angel makes him pretty special. In fact, using those bands I mentioned, he’s a one-man Steve Perry/Neal Schon, Bobby Kimball/Steve Lukather or Brad Delp/Tom Scholz.

Yes, maybe the Bon Jovi comparison is too facile. Closer to Journey. I’m not a big fan of Journey, but I do like Boston and Toto. Not all arena rock is inherently bad. As to Canadian bands, given the choice between Triumph and Rush, I’ll go with The Band. 😎

      • Here’s a few great songs Rik Emmett did with Triumph that show off his guitar work & vocals:
Fight The Good Fight (from the Allied Forces album)
Stranger In A Strange Land (from the Thunder Seven album)
Lay It On The Line and Hold On (both from the Just A Game album)

How lovely to see you back with another FYF. Can’t believe it’s six years since the last one though. Argh… where has the time gone.

As for Triumph, totally new to me so will have to give them a listen and report back. Just spotted your return though so had to jump in and say welcome back!

    • Thanks for checking in, Alyson. It’s great to hear from you. This version of Forty Year Friday will be very different than the last one, considering the big changes in the musical landscape between 1977 and 1983. Not sure how you’ll feel about Triumph, but if you’ve ever been a fan of “arena rock” bands like Journey, Toto or Foreigner, you may enjoy them. I hope 2023 is treating you well.

I can’t lie and say this FYF will mean as much to me as the one from 1977, but I’ll be interested to see what you come up with. In 1977 I was still at school but by 1983 I had started work and was also studying for professional exams (and trying to fit in a social life) SO, not nearly as much time to listen to music, although I would have been aware of all that was popular at the time – except Triumph it seems! I really don’t think they bothered our popular music charts at all. Having just checked they had a single reach the No. 69 spot in 1980 and two of their albums (from ’80 and ’81) reached the lower reaches of the album charts. Nothing after that.

The verdict is yes, they really do remind me of all those American arena rock bands of the time. I enjoyed listening to them on the radio but didn’t buy any of those albums. In the early ’80s, American culture was very different to what the average young person was experiencing here in the UK, especially if you lived outwith the big cities. I watched the film Fast Times At Ridgemont High recently as it kept being referenced in the drama Stranger Things – I really enjoyed it (the music of Triumph would have fitted the soundtrack really well) and wrote about it over at my place, but the difference between life at an American High School and one in the UK was vast at the time. We didn’t drive to school or wear our individual ‘cool’ clothes or have weekend jobs in shiny new malls or hang out by the pool… . I think arena rock suited you and your generation better than it did we Brits at the time. Anyway just my thought as ever but it seems Triumph are new to many other too.

I’m going to give Triumph a 5/10 which will give me some wiggle room going forward when you share albums by artists I know well, and followed at the time. Great to see you back.

      • That’s a very generous rating for Triumph, Alyson, considering they’re not really your thing, but I understand the desire for some wiggle room. You really plan ahead, eh? Did I miss your post about Fast Times At Ridgemont High? If so, please send me a link. If I saw it I’m sure I left a long comment, as it was THE definitive movie of my teenage years. I saw parts of it again last week and I still love it.

Looking at my comment it was very long and wordy so sorry for that but you’ve been absent for quite some time so making up for lost time!

As for my post, as I say it came about because of Stranger Things (not sure if you watched it). They reference the film all the time so it was obvious that it was THE definitive movie for your generation. Here is the link (hope it comes up ok).

    Rich!

I am so pleased to see you writing here again (although it looks like I’m a few months late to the show!). I’ve been checking back every so often throughout last year but then started a new position in February and have been full-tilt ever since. The classic rock station in my Midwest hometown used to play some Triumph (Lay It On The Line, Magic Power, etc), but that was my only exposure to them. Then about 6-8 months ago I went down a rabbit hole discovering a lot of their deeper tracks. And what a pleasure it was. Rik Emmett is just a fantastic guitar player and singer. How he does both at the same time is a mystery to me. Their arrangements are also a bit of a bridge from 70s prog rock to what would become simpler, straight-ahead rock and roll in the 80s. It was a time when you could have a slower intro of ~1 minute w/o the ADD listener turning the dial. Add to the fact that these guys are probably some of the nicest people in the music biz (along w/Loverboy…maybe it is a Canadian thing?!) and I’m a fan.

I’ll try not to go crazy commenting on some of the other more recent posts, but there are some great albums coming up. Looking forward to your own memories and insight into some of this great music. Can it really be 40 years already! Yikes.

    • Hi Bill. It’s great to hear from you. I hope you’re enjoying the new job position in spite of the full-tilt schedule. So glad you’ve been digging Triumph. It’s never too late to discover this great band. The fact that they had two great singers who did it all while wailing on their instruments made them extra special. Rik Emmett is in a class by himself. That voice is incredible, and he can do just about anything on a 6-string. Plus his songwriting is consistently great. They really do seem like really nice guys, and you’re probably right about it being a Canadian thing.

I still can’t believe 40 years have passed since the albums in this series were released. My memories of hearing them for the first time are still fresh, and I never tire of listening to them. Glad you feel the same way. Cheers!
