Revisiting my extensive music collection, one artist at a time

I’M ALIVE…AND I MISS YOU (A Blogger’s Lament)

When I wrapped up the Forty Year Friday series on my favorite albums of 1977 back in December 2017, my plan was to take a few months off from blogging. My wife & I had recently completed a whole-house renovation, which included my long-awaited “media room,” where I finally had access to my music collection, stereo and drums for the first time in more than 2-1/2 years. I jokingly told her that I would be locking myself in that room for a year, making up for so much lost time, but really I just wanted to stop analyzing & writing about music for a while and simply listen (and watch music DVDs & blu-rays) with no agenda or timetable. There was no plan for returning to this blog. I figured I would wait until inspiration & motivation struck and take it from there.

Then a family emergency in April turned into an ongoing family “situation” which has filled up my schedule. After several months I’m finally making a conscious effort to find time for music, although on a much more limited basis than I had originally planned. Blogging continues to take a back seat to other priorities, but I really miss the ongoing conversations I’ve had with my readers over the last 7+ years. At some point I hope to return to regular posting, and visiting my favorite blogs, but until then my contributions to the blogosphere will remain sporadic. In the interim please continue to check out the blogroll at the bottom of the page for links to other blogs you might enjoy. I just wanted to let everyone know that I’m Alive…and I Miss You. Here are Jackson Browne and Rolling Stones for some musical context.

Ah Rich – What a lovely surprise to see this post appear on a Friday evening as I sit here bashing away on the keyboard. You have been missed.

I think you know I have an ongoing family situation also, specifically relating to my mum. It definitely throws any idea of a normal life out the window for a while but no-one’s fault, just something that can’t be planned for. I’m so sorry you have stuff going on as well, hope things resolve themselves soon. Thinking of you.

As for the song choices, I wish I had one of my anecdotes to recount (there always seemed to be one didn’t there?). All I can think of is that Miss You by the Stones was around the time of Forty Year Friday. It reminds of times spent with my very good school-friends, just as we got to those really liberating years of becoming independent of the parents, but not yet old enough to have pesky responsibilities. Good to hear it again – first time in a long time.

Nice that you took the time to drop by with an update. The music room will be well used in due course I’m sure. In the meantime take care of yourself.

    • Thanks so much, Alyson. Sorry for the delayed response but my family situation became a family emergency again this past week, shortly after I posted this, so time has been more limited than usual. Sadly I know you’re dealing with essentially the same thing so lots of good wishes coming your way from across the pond.

The album with “Miss You” would have been included in Forty Year Friday if I continued it into 2018. One of their all-time classics.

Please don’t apologise for the delayed response as I can well imagine how busy you are. It will get better, but in the meantime, important to look after yourself too. Thanks for the good wishes.

It’s great to have you still participating in the music quizzes. I spend some of my spare time thinking up …. Man songs for you for when you score 100%! Come back when you’re ready and I hope your family situation is manageable.

Hope to see you back blogging in 2019?

    • Hi Alyson. It’s so great to hear from you. Thanks so much for checking in. Apologies for the delayed response but I was in New York for a week celebrating Christmas with my wife’s family and several groups of friends. Happy to be back home now with a few days off to unwind. My family situation is somewhat stable right now and I’m making the most of that for as long as it lasts. I hope all is well by you and things are okay with your mum. Did you have a nice Christmas?

Although I will likely continue to have limited time for blogging in 2019, I have an idea to re-purpose some of the stuff I’ve written in the past for a weekly series, so stay tuned for that. I really miss initiating conversations with my fellow music lovers and this will give me a chance to do so.

Happy New Year and keep the wonderful posts coming in 2019.

      Cheers!
      Rich

Good to hear you had a good time with family and friends over Christmas. Also good to hear the family situation is stable at the moment. Mine is too actually as my mum has now moved to a care home where she seems to have settled in really well. Lots of visiting to be done, and so much admin, but none of the 24 hour care which is a relief.

Hope to see you back here in 2019 – Can’t believe I’m still blogging three years on, but as you say, it’s great having a circle of fellow music lovers to exchange comments with. Happy New Year when it comes and all the best for 2019!

      • I’m happy to hear that your mum has settled into her care home. Never an easy transition for the elderly…or their caregivers. I’m sure it’s been a relief to not have that 24-hour responsibility anymore. As for future blogging, be on the lookout very soon for some re-purposed content here. Not my ideal approach but something has to be done if I’m going to keep in touch with all my blog buddies. Cheers to you & your loved ones.
