Revisiting my extensive music collection, one artist at a time

KamerTunesBlog Year In Review 2015

2015 has been a tumultuous year for me. As suggested in the Wait Until The Summer’s Gone and Long Time Gone posts that bookended my six month break from writing about music…and connecting with my readers, other bloggers and fellow music lovers…a combination of good, bad & time-consuming life events kept me focused on other things for nearly half the year. Whereas in the past I’ve revisited the complete catalogs of ten or more artists, this year I only managed to cover two (Toto and Supergrass), but I also wrote about my Not-So-Guilty Pleasures, my Favorite Debut Albums, my First Five Concerts and my appreciation for the non-stop hook-fest that is Survivor’s “High On You.” Although I was “off the grid” for much of 2015 I still managed to accumulate lots of CDs & LPs (I am an obsessive music collector just like you, after all), and somehow I found the time to listen to each new acquisition at least a couple of times. As I looked through the list of albums I got this year, I expected to vaguely remember most of them but was pleasantly surprised at how many wonderful discoveries I made, in addition to all the excellent new releases by artists I already love. What could have been a down year for me, musically-speaking, turned out to be another winner, with just as many memorable albums as the last few years.

Below you’ll find two lists. The first one highlights the albums that were released in 2015 (and some from 2014 that I didn’t get to last year) which made the biggest impression on me, while the second list covers the reissues, live albums, compilations, box sets & other older releases that I spent the most time with. Just like last year, I didn’t have time to include links to audio clips but everything on these lists is worth seeking out, whether it’s via YouTube, a streaming service or a “give it a shot without hearing it first” CD or LP purchase (which is often my preferred method of musical research).

Thanks to everyone who stopped by in 2015 and shared your stories, opinions, suggestions and support. I hope you & your loved ones are enjoying the holiday season. Wishing you a happy, healthy & musically adventurous New Year.

Great to have you back Rich! Quite a comprehensive list as well and very diverse! I’m sure HMO will rejoice when he notices the Saxon collection! Ha! Considering you a had a ton of stuff on your plate in regards to family and moving commitments you still took in a lot of tunes!
    Well done….
All the best to U and your family this holiday season…

    • Thanks, Derek. Best wishes to you & your loved ones as well.

Until this year I didn’t own any Saxon, so that box set was a welcome addition to my collection. Not everything is great but certainly the first 4-5 albums are excellent. As for the rest of my lists, I’m thrilled that I was able to take in so much new music, while also letting lot of my old favorites keep me company during some of the more stressful times. Believe it or not, everything on the lists probably adds up to about 20-25% of the music I acquired in 2015. Yep, I have a problem. Haha.

      Best…

Merry Christmas Rich, I hope 2016 is much less tumultuous for you – though I hope it still contains such wonderful music investments!

    • Thanks, Geoff. What would we do without music, through good times & bad times. Hmm, why am I thinking about Led Zeppelin now? Haha. Once my wife & I buy a new house and I have my media room set up, I’m thinking about doing a series on the Zeppelin super-deluxe box sets. Never thought I would write about my all-time favorite band but this seems like a good excuse to do so.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you & your loved ones. Looking forward to lots of fun conversations in 2016.

      Cheers!

Wow! Those are impressive lists! Especially given everything else you had going on (as you noted). Well done Rich!

I am especially keen to get my mitts on that Wilco boxed set. But man, there’s a ton of stuff in there I’ve never heard of, and that makes me happy. More new-to-me musics to check out!

Happy Holidays to you and yours, Rich!

    • Thanks, Aaron. Isn’t it amazing how many new albums are released every year, and how many of them are excellent? I’m constantly adding to my must-check-out list based on all the posts in our wonderful blogging community, and I hope you eventually hear some of the albums included in my lists. If only we could listen to music 24/7.

Happy Holidays & New Year to you & your loved ones.

      Best wishes,
      Rich

Hi Rich! As always, excellent lists. The new Decemberists’ album caught my attention right away. I didn’t know that Mark Knopfler also had a new release. I’m waiting to listen to the new Iron Maiden release…I’m half-tempted to wait until the tour and hopefully see live performances first.

Why see live performances first? If anything, I think that it is better to know the songs well before hearing them live. Also, at least one song—one of the best ones (though they are all good)—they will probably never play live.

The new Maiden album is definitely good. Very good.

Hi Phillip, I thought it would be an interesting perspective and one I’ve never experienced before.
I’m glad to know that the new Maiden album is very good. That seems to be the general consensus.

Indeed. And I can’t think of any band which has maintained such high quality over such a long period. We are talking 35 years or so now.

I’m looking forward to Rich revisiting his Maiden collection.

      • Happy New Year, Danica and Phillip. I hope 2016 has gotten off to a great start for both of you. I like Danica’s plan to see Maiden on the current tour before listening to the new album. There have only been a handful of times when I saw an artist without knowing their latest record but each time it made me appreciate the album even more when I finally heard it. In the case of Maiden, it’s a great record but it’s not like they’re breaking any new ground.

Phillip, I promise to eventually revisit & write about the Maiden catalog but I need to get settled in my new hometown first. They’re pretty high on my list of priorities once I get back to my regular blogging activities.

        Best…
        Rich
