It’s been nearly 6 months since my last blog post and a lot has happened in that time. I went on hiatus for the summer knowing that my wife & I would be putting our house on the market and moving 500 miles away from New York, the place I’ve called home for my entire life. I figured 3 months would be enough time to plan, pack & get settled but, as John Lennon once sang, “life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” A couple of family emergencies led me to refocus my priorities and music took a back seat throughout the summer and beyond. I’m happy to report that the situation is mostly under control, which is all that really mattered to me.
Not only was I unable to write my blog, but I also had little to no time for listening to music or playing the drums. Fellow musicians and anyone with a similar passion will understand how out-of-sync I was. My wife & I decided early on that we would find a rental property as we got to know our new hometown, which meant that my media room/man cave, with walls of CDs, LPs, box sets, surround sound audio system, drumkit, etc., would be on indefinite hold. It also meant that my music collection would be stored in boxes until we buy a house where I can set up a new-and-improved audio/video space. That’s the situation I currently find myself in, and the following photos should give you a sense of the room I left behind.
Anyone who has ever stopped by this blog knows that my main purpose is to revisit complete discographies a few albums at a time, usually focusing on the lesser-played artists in my collection so I can gain a new appreciation for them. I’m not sure the experience will be quite as satisfying without access to physical product, so until things are back to normal I will shift the focus of KamerTunesBlog to other music-related topics that I hope you find enjoyable. I may also revisit the catalogs of some of my favorite artists (something I never planned on doing when I started the blog) since I already know their music so well and can simply listen to the digital copies I have on my hard drive.
The most important & enjoyable aspect of writing this blog is interacting with fellow passionate music fans, and that’s what I’ve missed the most during my extended absence. I see this as an ongoing conversation with friends I’ve (in most cases) never met. I hope my enthusiasm is contagious and I look forward to reconnecting soon.
Until next time, I will leave you with the two songs that inspired the title of this post, courtesy of Crosby, Stills & Nash and Aerosmith.
This. THIS!
WELCOME BACK, RICH!!

Oh man, I feel your pain about being out of sync. We’ve moved a few times, across provinces in this big ol’ country of ours, and it is never a quick or easy thing, and things stay in the air way too long. Gah! Your life in boxes!!! I also totally get it that not playing the drums or playing music really messed with your rhythms (this pun was totally intended). I hope you get set up and settled and back in the groove soon!
Also: THOSE SHELVES. Do want! Those are beautiful. And our first peek into your space (I think). I remember when you said how many items you have and I said POST PICS! and you said no thanks and that’s cool. At least we get to see the shelves! They look wonderful. Much nicer than the ones in my man cave. Did you build them yourself?
I am also thrilled you’re feeling like writing new content. Whatever it is, Rich, we’ll read it. Bring it on! You have been missed. Welcome back!

I’m glad you understand what it’s like to have your music collection in limbo, and I appreciate your drumming pun. Well played.
Those shelves were built by a carpenter I hired based on my specifications. In the top left photo you’ll see a set of three shelving units with handles on them. Those were doors that blocked a utility space, set on heavy duty casters, based on a suggestion from my ever-resourceful wife. That gave me storage for around 2,000 CDs. In the bottom left photo you’ll see two handles in the corner. In those deep storage drawers I kept all of my LPs, and my drums were tucked in the corner by the CD shelves. It was a creative use of a small space. Hopefully my next house has a larger space so I won’t have to squeeze things in every nook & cranny.
Again, thanks for the “welcome back” and kind words. I really appreciate it.

Welcome back, Rich! It’s great to see you — you have been missed. Those shelves are fantastic. I hope you’re doing okay without your man cave/media room. Maybe you can find a space to play, at least.
Expanding your topics will be interesting. I know that I’ll enjoy whatever you decide to write.
What a great evening! I’m looking forward to your next post. 🙂

Thanks for the continued support, Danica. I really appreciate it. It’s been a little strange (very strange, actually) to not have a man cave, but I know it’s a temporary situation. I don’t really have a place, or the equipment, for serious music listening right now. It’s mostly MP3s on my computer speakers, although I have a micro stereo in my office and I’ve enjoyed playing all of my recent purchases at work.
Have a great day and happy Thanksgiving (you’re American, right?).
Best…

What a joy it will be when the new location is sorted and a new (expanded?) ‘Music Central’ created! Til then, welcome (back) to the ranks of disorganised random haphazard bloggers. 🙂

Thanks for the “welcome back” message, Bruce, and for coining the term “disorganized random haphazard bloggers.” That’s definitely the quote of the day. My goal in finding a new house is to have a larger space, or at least one with a better layout. I really miss my surround sound set-up, but with several new 5.1 DVDs & Blu-rays I have added incentive to find a new place quickly.
I hope all is well in Australia.
Best…

Wow, those are some shelves. Great to have you relatively back in the ol’ saddle.
Were you able to take the shelves with your did they stay behind in the old place?

Thanks for the good wishes. It’s great to be back. Sadly those shelves became part of that basement so the new owner can figure out what to do with them. My focus now is finding a new house that has a great space for me to set up a bigger & better media room.
Best wishes,
Rich

Thanks for the kind words, Ian. It’s always great to hear from you. After the new “parlour” (I like that) is set up I’ll consider posting a photo or two. Hopefully I can get to that point by the middle of 2016.
I hope all is well with you & your family.
All the best…

I always loved the way my Grandmother (of English heritage) always referred to the room where she kept all her collectibles, as her “Parlour”. The Canadian/English spelling, of course. Us grandkids were of course banned from the room until we were old enough to keep our hands at our sides.
My family and I are doing well, ,Rich, thanks for asking. I hope you and yours have a fantastic holiday season in your new digs.

I completely understand your grandmother’s desire to not have kids messing about in her parlour. I have occasionally allowed my young nieces to enter the man cave, but they were closely observed the entire time.
The holidays at our townhouse should be very nice, but we’re also looking forward to next year when we can enjoy the season in our new permanent home. I’m sure there will be lots of adventures along the way.
