Revisiting my extensive music collection, one artist at a time

K.D. LANG Preview – Anywhere But Here

Canadian singer/songwriter k.d. lang was the winner of my recent poll by a wide margin over Hall & Oates, Grateful Dead, Los Lobos and Toto. I had hoped to begin my series on her discography by now but various personal & work responsibilities have kept that from happening. I immediately started revisiting her first few albums as soon as the poll closed and I already took notes on each album. I’ve also prepared album covers, photos and highlighted MP3 files for the first post. The only thing that’s still pending is the post itself, which usually takes a few hours to write, proof-read & upload. I expect to begin the series within the next week. Until then, one appropriately-named k.d. lang song has popped into my head and I wanted to share it with my readers.

k.d. lang Photo (circa 2000)

Back in 2000, I heard a song called “Anywhere But Here” nearly every day at my gym. The voice was clearly that of k.d. lang and the music was similar to the sunny pop that filled her most recent album at the time, Invincible Summer, but this track was not on that album nor any of her other releases. With a little research I discovered that it was the theme song for a 1999 movie of the same name starring Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman. I’ve never seen the movie nor purchased the soundtrack, and I stopped going to that gym years ago, so until recently I had forgotten about this song. To the best of my knowledge it has never appeared on any of her albums (including compilations), but thanks to the internet I was able to locate the promotional video. Since the embedding feature was disabled for that clip I’ve embedded a video with a static image of the movie poster below. The promotional video can be viewed by clicking this link:

I’ve been traveling a lot this past month, including three weekends where I was far from home, so it seems like I’ve been “anywhere but here” (New York) for a while. Although lyrically she’s striving to leave her surroundings while I’m eager to remain close to home, the song still strikes a chord and I hope it does the same for you. Her glorious voice and that subtly inviting melody sound as good today as they did the first time I heard it 14 years ago.

I’ve never seen that film, although by the year it did come out in the middle of my Portman crush.

I don’t mind this song. I have heard it numerous times on the lite-rock radio station here. I’m not a big fan of drum programs in general, I prefer a drummer. That aside, k.d. is great on this!

    Looking forward to the series.

    • Hi Mike. I think I stumbled on the film once when scanning the channels but didn’t stick with it very long. It wasn’t really up my alley in spite of the two lovely stars.

I’m flexible when it comes to drum programming, which surprises most people who know that I’m a drummer. There are certain songs that work just fine with a synthetic rhythm, and since the selling points here are the melody & her voice, the musical accompaniment is secondary to me. It’s certainly not one of her greatest songs but I’m glad I was able to highlight it here.

Can’t wait to get going on this series. I was really digging her early records last week and I’ve lost momentum since then. Hope to get it back in the next couple of days.

Thanks for stopping by. It’s always appreciated.

808 ROOLZ! Far more mechanical on this was that chugging rhythm electric.

      Like

      • A drummer would never state that a drum machine “roolz” but I agree that it works perfectly for this song.

      • I figured that was the case. We drummers can be a bit sensitive, though, so thanks for clarifying.

I played in an 80’s Electropop band SEE SPOT RUN- “Spot” was our Roland 808 and drummers came to our shows to boo us. Technology can be a tool or a curse. In our case, no drums meant there was money & stage room for two gorgeous female backing singers.

        Like

      • That’s an ironic band name, as I’m guessing “Spot” usually stayed in one place. The questions is, which breaks down first: a drum machine, a drummer, or gorgeous female backing singers? Not sure there’s a definitive answer to that, but I’ve been playing drums for nearly 40 years and I’m still going strong.

Welllll, I can state the female backing singers broke down at least once a month and required service.
        .
And Kudos on your drumming longevity! A lot of drummers my age are giving it up.

      • They don’t make backing vocalists like they used to. Haha.

As for drumming, I’ve had a few periods where I started running out of steam, but I’ve been really into it in recent years. Hoping that continues into my 50s which are only two years away.

        Are you still playing regularly?

Gig 2-3 weekends a month with a covers band, just to keep chops up. Would play every night if I could.

        Like

      • What instrument(s) do you play? I seem to remember you mentioning keyboards but I’m wondering if you dabble in other instruments. Glad you’re keeping your chops up and playing regular gigs. I stopped playing in cover bands years ago and it’s harder for local “original” bands to get decent regular gigs. My current band (a trio) is very good but our schedules only allow us to rehearse twice a month and gig maybe 2-3 times a year. I try to play my drums at least several days a week, which is my way of keeping up my chops.

Play basic Blues/Country bass too, more gigging opportunities. I shamelessly brag about playing keyboards whenever I can on the net, on the off chance of meeting someone close by to jam with. I wrote for and played in an original prog-rock band up until last year. Had to pack it in for same reasons you give- family men with no time for rehearsal, no places to gig. Sad to say, but live music is dying.

        Like

      • Not sure if live music is dying but finding places to play where you can attract a supportive audience has become increasingly difficult.

Nice to know that you played in a prog band since I’m a huge prog fan. My definition of prog is pretty wide-ranging, so basically any slightly unpredictable pop/rock would fall under that umbrella. I’ve played in dozens of bands over the years covering many genres, but I’ve never played in a prog band. I always throw in my prog & jazz flourishes but it’s usually in support of something else.

Our guitarist/vocalist was huge Rush, Yes fan. I tried to stretch out in more directions. Ultravox, or Magazine e.g. I saw as prog/new wave.
RE; “Prog Flourishes” does it count that I play all kinds of proggy synth squiggles in “Love Potion #9” w/ weekend band? ;P

        Like

      • Yep, synth squiggles definitely qualify as prog flourishes. Well done, incorporating that into “Love Potion #9.” The bass player in my current band also loves Rush so we’re constantly pushing each other into that realm even though the songs (which are written mostly by the guitarist) are a little more straightforward rock. Our jams usually take him into realms he otherwise wouldn’t explore and we all get to play to the edges of our abilities, which is essential in a trio.

    Hi Rich,
I love k.d. lang. I have seen this film, and from what I remember, it was quite good. Looking forward to reading your posts on her.

    • Thanks, Sarca. So happy to hear from a fellow k.d. lang fan. Even though she won my recent poll I’ve read a lot of comments from people who don’t take her seriously. Hopefully my upcoming series will help change a few minds.

      I appreciate you stopping by.

      Best wishes,

Really love the production on the bridge (and her vocals of course). The echo guitar effect is really nice. Thanks for posting this, would never had heard otherwise.

    • Thank you, your highness (are Earls considered “highness”?). I feel like I’ve already accomplished my mission by helping to expose this under-heard song to other fans. In some ways I’m grateful that I’ve been too busy lately to complete my first post in this series, since it allowed me to get reacquainted with this track.

      Cheers!

From her country days until now her voice has only gotten better. She gives110 per cent live. Have you checked out her “riding the rails” video with Take Six?

      Like

      • Hi Catherine. Thanks so much for stopping by, and especially for pointing me in the direction of k.d.’s collaboration with Take Six. I have one of their albums and I’ve always been impressed by their harmonies, but this performance had eluded me until now. Since I will only be revisiting k.d. lang’s albums and not delving into every soundtrack contribution or collaborations with other artists, items like these would otherwise go unnoticed.

For anyone reading these comments and wanting to hear this performance, here’s a link to the video (which includes footage from the film Dick Tracy). Enjoy.

I understand why she won your poll by a landslide. I love her voice. I did see this movie but couldn’t provide many details…I’m pretty sure it was decent.

    • Hi Danica. I’m still surprised that k.d. lang won this poll, and equally surprised (and slightly disappointed) that there wasn’t much reaction to the series I wrote about her. Not that I measure success on page views & comments but, as you know, I love starting conversations about the music I’m writing about and the lack of interest was unfortunate. At least I enjoyed listening & writing about her, which is the most important part.

Well, I believe that sometimes readers can be a bit intimidated…not that you’re intimidating or off-putting in any way…but when there’s obviously so much knowledge, a comment can seem a bit risky…as though the person commenting will come across as…pedestrian? As in, “Wow, this guy Rich knows SO MUCH that anything I say is going to make me seem like a music illiterate.”

      • I appreciate the sentiment, Danica, and I suppose some non-music-obsessives might feel that way, but I thought there would be enough devoted k.d. lang fans who would love to chat about her music & compare notes. I’m always amazed when anyone stops by so it’s not like I get upset when they don’t, but it feels like walking into a party with no guests. Not sure if that’s a good analogy but hopefully you know what I’m getting at.

I can’t wait to get back into the blogging groove. I’ve had so many things keeping me from music the past 4-5 months and it’s been more difficult than I expected. I need to get my groove back.

Hmm…I think a great audio system should be your priority. At least some excellent computer speakers, for now.

      • Will do. Thanks. I finally uncovered my micro component system in my office so I can listen to music in decent fidelity once I get that set up. At home I don’t have anything like that but getting the man-cave right is a top priority when we buy a house. Fortunately my wife agrees, even though she bemoaned the fact that it took about 100 file storage boxes to store all of my CDs & LPs. This has to be the last move I make for a very long time.

      • Packing it was a labor of love. I have everything boxes up in order so whenever the shelving is in place in the new man-cave I will be able to unpack quickly. Figuring out what to do with the box sets might be a little tricky, since they come in so many shapes & sizes…and I have over 200 of them. That is a “problem” I’m really looking to solving.
