Revisiting my extensive music collection, one artist at a time

A Music Blog With Music / Am I Making You Horny?

Adding music to a music blog? What a concept.

I began writing this blog in March 2011, and since then I’ve revisited the catalogs of 12 great artists. In the process I got to know nearly 200 albums better than I ever did before, with some of them becoming new favorites. I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from friends, family and people who just stumbled onto this site, and the question I hear most often is: “Why don’t you include samples of the music you’re writing about?” I guess I assumed that anyone stopping by would already be a fan of these artists, and I hoped they would simply enjoy reading my impressions of songs & albums they’re already familiar with. Apparently you want more, so now I’m going to give it to you. Unfortunately I’m not very tech-savvy, so it’s taken some time to find out how to accomplish this.

There are a handful of options available, and I will probably utilize all of them: YouTube clips, embedded Sound Cloud files and the WordPress audio player. Before I move on to my next artist’s catalog, I’ll be adding music files to my existing posts over the next couple of weeks. Whether you’ve already read these posts or are coming here for the first time, I hope these song samples will help you better appreciate these artists. Keep checking in, as I’ll be adding music in the same order as this artist list: Van Morrison, Talking Heads, The Band, Roxy Music, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Television, David Bowie, Nick Drake, Black Sabbath, Big Star and Tom Waits. [**Update: Sound files have been added for all of these artists as of July 28, 2012. I hope you enjoy them**]

In order to test out the various options for including music here, I’ve chosen a handful of my favorite songs that feature horn sections and included them below. I would really appreciate if you let me know which format(s) work best, and please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to improve them or if there are better options out there that I might have missed. Thanks, and enjoy these songs:

Chicago – “Questions 67 & 68”
James Brown – “Get It Together”
Earth, Wind & Fire – “In The Stone”

Phil Collins – “I Cannot Believe It’s True (Live)”

The Phenix Horns (Earth Wind & Fire; Phil Collins)

All good – sound quality + song selection. YouTube is a little weak, but you get the visuals, which are important. Have a feeling that these artists are on deck. And no you’re not!

    • Thanks, Mr. Wiki. Glad you like the song selection, and that the sound quality is good. I have to figure out a way to incorporate these songs into each post without taking up too much screen space. Although I may revisit some of these artists in the future, they’re not “on deck” just yet. I just felt like sharing a few horn-based tunes that I love.

I’m a sucker for horn bands so I like all the music you posted. As for the format, I like the first example the best as it is the most streamlined. Soundcloud is okay too, though obviously it takes up more space on the screen. I’d rather you not go the YouTube route, though, unless you’re writing specifically about the visual aspect of music. I’ve seen too many other blogs that post video after video and it just seems like overkill sometimes.

    • Thanks so much for the feedback, Glenn. Each of these formats has advantages & disadvantages. At some point there will be an issue of storage capacity, since I’d like to keep free accounts with these services. However, if I find a format I love, I will probably sign up for a premium account just so I won’t run out of space.

My goal is to include just a handful of clips with each post, and not bombard readers with songs and videos. I agree that it gets very cumbersome. In some instances one YouTube clip might not be a bad option, but I will probably relegate it to the end of the post.

Once again, your input is greatly appreciated. I hope all is well by you.

      Best wishes,
      Rich

The only one I can successfully play on my smartphone and work-issued laptop is the YouTube clip. I think this is an out of date browser, so I’ll try on my personal PC and let you know.

    • Hmm, that’s interesting…and a little disheartening, as I’m sure a lot of people are using smartphones & laptops when they stop by here. Not sure there’s much I can do, but I’ll be sure to include at least one YouTube clip with each post. Thanks.
